The cathedral of Valencia (metropolitan basilica) is the seat of the archbishopric of Valencia and is dedicated to Santa Maria at the request of Jaume I, faithful to the traditional Marian devotion of the 13th century. It is located on top of the old mosque, which in turn had been built over the old Visigothic headquarters.
